Hmm. On my last trip I carried items #10 through #6, and item #2, plus a non-solar charger standing in at #4. So in other words: almost all the gear, without the practical bits like the standardized cable or the good gear bag! Ha.

Actually, I have a cool laptop backpack that I'm pretty pleased with, and it'll hold all my other writing-related paraphernalia, plus a book or two and - in a pinch - a fleece or hoodie. It's not big enough to hold the rest of my crap, though. So I guess it's a souped-up travel writing daypack. :D

Thanks, Craig! You're definitely the audio man and as far as Macs go, I'm clueless, despite the fact that my brother's life mission is to convert me.

A couple of comments on the loaded laptop...

I used wavepad for about a year before dumping it for audacity, which is both free and open-source. It seemed to fit my workflow better then, but for the last three years I've been working on a Mac, which means garageband for 95% of sound recording and editing...with a couple of other programs for more grueling work.

If you have a Mac and you write it's imperative to download Scrivener. Windows has its good points but it does not have Scrivener. Eat your heart out Win/Linux writers.

Terrific article Julie. One more for the list - a magic trick and a pack of cigarettes, both good for breaking the ice with surly border guards!
