I recently spent 4 hours lost in the jungle at night with little equipment, and it was the most horrifing experience in my life. Sadly the group we had paid for the expedition were very irresponsible. We stayed calm and the guides came back to get us so we made it to camp before midnight, so it worked out fine.

My favorite mosquito repellent is Johnson's baby mosquito Repellent. I don´t know the ingredients, but it´s the best I´ve tried and I live in a tropical country.

Since protection is never perfect I also recomend calergin lotion, it really eases the pain of bug bites.

Always bring a rain jacket and wear boots. Rainforests are just that - (lots of) rain in the forest. Be prepared for copious amounts of water.

Great article and solid advice.

As someone who just returned recently from a trip to Colombia where we spent four long days in the rainforest, I have a new appreciation for this harsh environment. In Colombia the Mosquitoes would respond to the DEET (make sure your repellent has a hight %!), but there were other little black flies that weren't bothered by it and devoured any exposed skin. I would recommend bringing long pants and a shirt with long sleeves in case you find yourself in a similar situation. Make no mistake: the rainforest in some parts of the world is the harshest environment on the planet.
