I'll be naming my first born Vidal. Any pub tour or tour group cannot artificially create those wild times with the locals, as hard as they may try. Whenever a tour bus pulls up, I just leave. Nothing beats a real insider to connect you to the real people and action. The hardest part is finding a cool cat like Vidal.

Just back from 3 weeks in Argentina and Brazil where we were dragged from Billy to Jack by the over-exuberant recommendations of an out of touch, non-local, travel book writer. We realized fairly swiftly that if we ever met this writer in a bar that we would have nothing in common except the use of the same airports. Needless to say we ditched the book after two days and went local hunting. Gentlemen bring on your travel revolution and may you have your most attractive local hunting jacket on.

I completely agree, most guidebooks are written by people who have never been to the destination.

I love that, that's so great! My friend had a similar experience. The possibility of visiting there is a real one...my company has an office in Reykjavik.

Candice, Iceland is awesome. Go if you get the chance. The funny thing is at the end when he said he wanted to move there, it reminded me of how, as we were leaving the country, my husband and I both said the same thing - "I want to move here!". I've fallen in love with places at first sight before, but (as cheesy as this may sound), I've never felt so instantly connected to a place as I did in Iceland.

I'm also hoping I can be the Detroit guide for Tim and Thomas!

"Locals aren’t usually the ones writing guidebooks or hosting travel shows and we see this as a mistake."
