I've been reading On Writing Well:The Classic Guide to to Writing Nonfiction by William Zissner. He stresses that writing is hard and the rewriting process (#5) is the key.
The book is very straightforward with many good examples.

Overall great points, and I totally agree with #10. Thanks for sharing.

Personally, I write tales of adventure to inspire others to take (or make) adventure in their life. And it often comes down to an attitude. Whether I take a subway ride to listen to the NY Philharmonic or hop the next plane to Saipan. Adventure awaits.

Stay adventurous,
Craig

Thanks. Every bit of advice helps :)

One thing that I have felt over the years is that keen observation makes a lot of difference. I used to struggle and wonder as to what to write on my experiences of a journey, and used to end up with prosaic imitations. I have been a lot better after I started observing every small thing carefully, and started talking a lot to the locals.

In a week and a half of examinations of the "profession" now called travel writing (thanks in part to who's name we will not mention), I've read some of the offerings from veterans in the field from the edgy side of the genre. There is much "Do as I say, not as I do." I'm reading their confessional book, digging the narrative, the writer is making me look up words in the dictionary, and then he/she goes on into cautionary tales about not wrting the exact way they are. I'm talking context , not style . We all have one of those.

So what's a girl to do as I prepare for my paying job and wonder really " Who the f**k cares?" Authenticity, a sense of humor, perserverencea, and , as you thoughtfully emphasize in the last tip, gratitude. BBC World SErvice is doing a grueling interview with a young man from the Congo. Now there's a reality check.
