What’s it really like to be a successful travel writer? Our new video series gives you the inside story.

As part of our efforts to celebrate and promote travel writing, we’ve launched a new video series offering a behind the scenes look at the life of travel writers.

Humbly shot and directed by myself, the first profile features the gonzo travel writer and tv host Robin Esrock, wandering around his current hometown of Vancouver, BC.

The idea is to offer a realistic take on what it means to be a travel writer: the good, the bad, and sometimes…the ugly. Each profile is presented on behalf of MatadorU, where travel writers of all levels can advance their careers.

I hope you enjoy the video (and feel free to share far and wide!)

Do you know a travel writer who should be featured in an upcoming profile? Share your ideas in the comments!

Nice video. I drew a lot of inspiration from Robin’s short video that he made after his RTW trip. Then I took my own, and experienced what he talks about with regard to readers responding to his writing. It only made me want to write more, see more, do more, so I could share with them (especially when they said family would prevent them from ever taking such a trip themselves).

Oh, and he turned me on to Bedouin Soundclash in that video too!

Fantastic video. Great series. Love seeing travel writers present the profession with truth and passion. Would enjoy seeing videos featuring the Matador editors and other folks like Kira Salak or Grant Lingel. :)

It’s a dream job if your dream is to travel, not if your dream is to make money. So true, and something a lot of people don’t seem to understand! Great vid, and awesome series idea.

Sweeeeeeet! Robin oozes inspiration, and fantastic production Ian.

Travel writing is definitely not a get-rich-quick while traveling on someone’s dime scheme.

You have to truly love it. It requires resilience.
