ED BURYN, now comfortably in his 70’s, is an American legend among vagabonds and roustabouts. Artist and author, Ed is perhaps best known for Vagabonding in the USA: A Guide for Independent Travelers and Foreign Visitors. Ed is a philosopher who prefers to travel as slow and deliberate as possible.

Recently I has the honor of editing a few hours of footage shot by Pat the Digital Vagabond interviewing Ed Buryn at his California home. Here are two videos where Ed speaks on the importance of travel. Ed speaks from a place of experiential wisdom peppered with sardonic wit.

Found it interesting that he would get rid of all the people in travel like travel agents and other conveniences. Some people have no desire to be a vagabond traveler and that’s fine. To each his own…I do agree that traveling on your own without using travel agents and other conveniences will stretch you as a person.

Ed makes a good point that you have control over your attitude, especially when it comes to money. He’s another person that mentions that gratitude is important.

Yeah, I stayed at Ed’s place a few nights before Burning Man this year and had a chance to talk to him at the festival and I got the impression that he felt the best and most pure travel is done by walking from place to place with no money.
This ain’t practical for most but it sure lights his fire!
