"I began to realize how much our entire lives are designed to avoid talking to people. Our tours are recorded. Our phones are answered by machines. Our political discussions happen through computers. And I wonder why I’m socially retarded."

I agree with Carlo. Any technology (or social movement) can have a positive or negative impact, depending on how it is used. True, the Internet and the rise of easily-accessible- and automated-information has led many to leave basic social graces behind, but it has also created a social revolution that has opened the doors of camaraderie and friendship to those who would have otherwise never left the house (Meetup.com is a great example of how one's online life can spill over into RL...real life).

Nice story. I was starting to think about how the Internet possibly further retards people's social skills. But then thought about all the people that I've met in person precisely because of the Internet (Couchsurfing, meetup.com), and concluded it just depends on how you use it.
