I love this post, it does sound a little paranoid but it is practical! I even had a GPRS tracker with me when I travel.

Carly,
Terrific information. Another suggestion is to store your critical information online and give selected access to others. That way if you lose your information, you or your designee can always go online and get the information you need from anywhere in the world. We recommend www.axcesspoints.com as a useful tool for storing information like your medical history, emergency contacts, and insurance information. If you and your readers would like to check it out, just send me an email at info@axcesspoints.com and I'll be happy to send you a promo code for free usage.

Great topic and great piece, Carly.
As a former tour guide for student groups, I'd add a special suggestion for teachers, parents or anyone traveling with kids and teens. Make sure that each kid in the group has the business card (with name, address, and phone number, plus room number, if applicable) of the place(s) where you're staying. Even barring natural disasters, kids get separated from groups easily and can use the card to get back to the right place or to leave a message there.

Fantastic post, Carly!

The only thing I'd add would be, if you are lucky enough to have a day or so of warning, be sure to grab some bottled water and some food that doesn't require cooking or refrigeration - peanut butter, jam and bread, or power bars and fruit, or whatever.

A hurricane hit my university town in 3rd year, and it was amazing to see how little foresight us liberal-arts-studying city kids had. Without grocery stores, we had absolutely no notion of how to feed ourselves. It was a hungry few days...
