Hi David, excellent subject!

Being away form friends and family is one of the few really hard problems with travelling over a long period of time.Luckily, technology has made it alot easier to communicate. Now I regularly speak with my family on skype. I've even learned my grandmother how to use it, at least to some degree! However, I still try to make it home at least 4-5 times a year.

wudup eva,

damn, jewish kids not getting to celebrate thanksgiving in canada--what's up with that?

were there not at least a few mrs. goldsteins or on those early boats or in early settlements, stoking on the new ingredients for making gefilte fish?

would make for some good research, a good story.

as far as from the US side of the border, no, thanksgiving has always been that one beautifully secular holiday wherein jews and gentiles, gringos and (strangely) indians all seem freely worship at the same feeding trough.

of course for me it always just represented the best time of year to go paddling.

Nice one, DM.

Hey, random question - and I do hate to sort of make you the Official Spokesperson, but here goes: Most Canadian Jewish kids I know don't celebrate Canadian Thanksgiving, seeing it as a Christian holiday, but you (and I think a few other Jewish Americans I know of) do the U.S. thing, obviously. Any idea if that's pretty widespread? Is it viewed as more of an American holiday than a Christian one?

I dunno. Just wondered about the difference, if it's a Canada-US cultural thing or just the quirks of the various individuals I happen to know on both sides of the border.

Man, I'm gonna miss my wife's veggie stuffing this year. We could make it, but it just sounds too tough in a hostel kitchen in Argentina. Her mom always bakes like 5 pies too. Damn.

Ah yes, the holidays. It's a great time to travel. Unless, of course, you'd rather be sitting around the table listening to people complain about this or that. Most of the time family members never change; they usually get worse :) If you don't like change, then you'll be comforted by conformity.

Enjoy the holiday wherever you are in the world!

Wow! Here I was thinking Thanksgiving wasn't that important to me and you went and made me all nostalgic and weird. Happy Thanksgiving to you and yours no matter where they (or you) may be.
