Check out Vermont Studio Center, too -- I'll be doing a residency there this winter. It's highly selective, but it also is the largest residency program in the country, which entails more spots and money.

The full fellowships are usually given to writers who have already published books, but I was awarded an artist grant (pays for half of it) with few publications. They have an incredible administration (who are all artists and writers too) who really want to help writers out. Visual artists are welcome as well, and it is considered one of the most "international" programs, so it's a great place for a travel writer!

Another residency to think about is Vermont Studio Center, which accepts writers of all kinds. I'll be doing a poetry residency there this winter. It's long established, and has great visiting writers.

While the full fellowships are extremely competitive (usually go to writers who have already published books), it's a little easier, I think, to get an artist's grant, which will usually cover half of all expenses. I was granted one with few publications. I think it's mostly based on the strength of your work. Many people from around the world apply, but there are more spots here that at any other residency in the US. And there are visual artists as well.

The folks who run the program are also all incredible, and writers/artists themselves. Certainly worth checking out!
