Excellent!

This blog was right on. I am from the States, and live in Australia. America has so many little treasures you wouldn't find unless you went by car. I have traveled coast to coast by bus. Sure it's quicker, but the experiences I had on a coast to coast roadtrip, I wouldn't trade for anything in the world. My most recent roady was a four day trip from LA, California to Amarillo, Texas and back. Even got to sneek a peek at the Grand Canyon along the way. Little, off the beaten track, towns are the way to go. Centuries old towns, preserved buildings all with their own stories and secrets, alive and bustling. Quaint accommodations, nice people, good little bars, and great meals.

If you live out of America, and you plan to visit the States, try to squeeze in a road trip for sure!

If you live in America, get out and drive!

Go where the road takes you ... Sometimes no plans are the best plans.

An addition to the rules: Bring your canine! I never take a road trip without the dog and I'm finding motels more pet friendly than ever.Great way to meet smiley, big hearted folks wherever you go.

A great book celebrating America's backroads is William Least Heat Moon's Blue Highways. I still use his calendar rule when seeking a diner: the more free calendars on the wall from local feed stores or insurance agents the better the food. Four calendars means you MUST eat there. Haven't gone wrong yet and I've been road tripping for almost 3 decades.

Its still possible to do a nice road trip, although prices are going up. If you don't mind sleeping in a reclined car seat in a rest area, the price gets even cheaper. I've done 3 such road trips covering the lower 48 states...pretty incredible. I'd recommend people do it while they can!

The ever rising gas prices have totally made me re-think my driving. It sucks that many road trips will be canceled this year because of the gas prices. Well thanks to Jack in the box you do not have to worry about staying home this summer to save. You love those tacos from Jack in the Box, don’t deny it.—the crispy goodness with the melted cheese, hot sauce and crisp lettuce on the inside. With gas becoming more and more expensive, Jack wants to help you fill your stomach. Bring any gas receipt to Jack in the Box next Thursday, June 26th, and get TWO FREE TACOS. No gimmicks, no hidden fees, no purchase necessary—just two free tacos! Let all your friends know if they like taaaaacos

I wish the US would have a better train system, like Europe. Driving a car is getting too expensive, not too mention I don't like sitting in a car for more than 4 hours. With gas prices so high, maybe train travel will become popular.

Matt- Nice article; I think it's especially good for people outside the U.S.

I totally agree with your observation: "Because of its size and history, each part of America seems, in many ways, like its own little country."

Re. gas: www.gasbuddy.com lets you plug in your local zip code (around the country) to find best price on gas wherever you are.
