Thanks for visiting! Like the registers found in shelters along the Appalachian Trail–notebooks filled with the thoughts and recommendations of passing hikers–The Traveler’s Notebook gives writers, travelers, photographers, and filmmakers a place to share ideas and experience.
We launched in Oct. 2007 as the first site in the Matador Network. Currently we average 106,000 unique monthly visitors with 190,000 pageviews a month. These numbers, combined with the rest of the sites on the network, make Matador the most-read independent travel publication on the web.
A Brief History
Originally the Notebook was created as an all-inclusive site for travelers and travel writers. Early on we published destination guides, job opportunities, and practical information such as How to Travel by Cargo Ship.
Now, with the expansion of other sites such as Matador Abroad in our network, we’ve been able to focus on writing, photography, and filmmaking, with tips on craft as well as a special emphasis on first-person narratives, often literally taking the form of unedited notes or journal pages.
Our goal over the next year is to become the go-to place for writers of all kinds to publish select travel notes and journals, and to continue to publish our unique vision for travel ‘notes’–work you wouldn’t typically find in either a literary journal or travel magazine, but which combines elements of both.
